Making a dish that asks for red wine vinegar only to discover you’re out? That may be very annoying, but several alternatives will not affect the flavor much, if at all.
Many recipes ask for some type of acid, and although you’re unlikely to have all of the vinegar kinds in your cupboard, swapping one acid for another typically works just well.
Best Red Wine Vinegar Substitutes
When you’re in a jam, there are a plethora of choices available to you. An acid is an acid, yet each one has its own unique taste.
I usually claim that you need four ingredients to achieve excellent taste in your meal. These four elements are heat, salt, acid, and fat. So long as you replace the red wine vinegar with another acid rather than just omitting it, you’ll be OK and your meal will be delicious.
You may always replace another vinegar and then add a little red wine to maintain the profiles as similar as possible.
My rule of thumb is that you can always add but never subtract. Particularly while replacing.
That being said, here are some excellent rice wine vinegar substitutes.
Vinegar made from white wine
The flavor of white wine vinegar is quite similar to that of red wine vinegar. Aside from being yellowish rather than crimson, the flavor is almost imperceptible.
Because white wine vinegar is gentler, you may add red wine to maintain the strong taste and color. The ratios remain the same when white wine vinegar is substituted for red wine vinegar.
If the recipe asks for 3 tablespoons of red wine vinegar, use the same amount of white wine vinegar.
Balsamic Vinegar No. 2
Balsamic vinegar provides the necessary acidity, but it is sweeter and richer than red wine vinegar.
When replacing balsamic vinegar, start with a lower quantity than your recipe asks for and gradually increase until you get the desired taste. It’s better to add in teaspoons at a time.
Sherry Vinegar is a kind of vinegar made from sherry.
Although it is milder and has a somewhat nutty taste, Sherry vinegar may be used as a replacement when you don’t have red wine vinegar on hand.
It will enhance rich tastes and provide a vinegar flavor similar to red wine vinegar. As with balsamic or apple cider vinegar, you should add a bit at a time.
When using Sherry as a replacement, you won’t notice much of a difference in your meal.
Apple Cider Vinegar is a kind of vinegar made from the juice of an apple.
Apple cider vinegar is an excellent substitute for red wine vinegar. It tends to be a bit more fruity, so start with less than the recipe asks for.
Apple cider vinegar has many health advantages and also packs a punch when used in salad dressings, marinades, and sauces.
Lemon Juice 5
You should use caution while substituting lemon juice. It adds the acid from the red wine vinegar, but it also changes the taste of your meal somewhat.
If you use too much, it may have a sour taste. Add a little amount, wait for it to render, and then taste to determine if you need more. I don’t suggest adding lemon if you want a strong-flavored meal.
Depending on the taste profile, this will work well with fish, poultry, salads, and certain sauces.
So, although you may not have red wine vinegar on hand, if you have red wine, you can certainly add it to maintain the same taste. If you truly want to replicate the taste, add 1 part red wine to 2 parts vinegar of choice to your recipe.
This will provide the most similar results to the original recipe. I’m talking about red wine and vinegar. Again, don’t overdo it; add it slowly to ensure you get the same flavor.
Vinaigrette de riz et vinaigrette
A versatile vinegar that is frequently used in Asian cuisines. This is a similar substitution for red wine vinegar. It’s sweet and acidic, but it’s not overpowering.
You may use a 1:1 ratio and it won’t affect the taste much, if at all. If you want the color, add a little red wine, but otherwise, it’s a fantastic choice.
This is a dash of vinegar that I often use.

1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
Vinegar of white wine
Add the same quantity as called for in the red wine recipe. You may also add some red wine if you have any on hand.
Vinegar of balsamic vinegar
Use less red wine than the recipe asks for. I like to add and taste to ensure that it does not overpower the meal.
Vinegar of Sherry
I’d use the same quantity; it’ll just have a little nutty taste.
ACV (apple cider vinegar)
Same as before, use equal amounts; it may add a bit extra freshness to the meal.
Juice of lemon
All of the citrus fruits are excellent choices. Squeeze a lemon to the same quantity specified in your recipe.
The color of red wine
Combine one part red wine and two parts vinegar.
Vinegar of rice wine
Use the exact quantity specified in the recipe. This is a fantastic substitute in my opinion.
